Around 1980 someone misheard the expression "honed in", they thought it was "homed in", which is incorrect.?

Now we only hear "homed in" and I wondered, doesn't anyone else remember the original expression? To hone in on something meant to focus or zero in on something by sharpening your attention. Homed in just sounds weird.
