Does this sound like the person got screwed on he divorce?

While I feel very sorry for your brother I would like to hear her side of the story especially what finance she provided during the marriage.I believe the lawyer is correct.Sell the house.She would have to move out and your brother would have some money at least.I would also like to know on what grounds did your brothers wife file for divorce.There seems to be something missing from the picture you paint of a wealthy young man,caring husband and devoted to his children.I believe that he just caved in to her and agreed to anything she said.He can ask for a variation order[costs nothing]since his work and salary has altered dramatically and it would help to get a doctors letter on the state of his health.He really should get back to his lawyer.Good luck to him.I went through similar situations and it is hard.
