Morbid alert: favorite deceased director?

We, the regulars in the Movies section, spend so much time discussing living directors, from Coppola and Scorsese to the unrelated Andersons (Paul Thomas, Wes), so let's stop and remember the greats who have passed on. Name your favorite deceased director and your top five films by him/her. Mine is David Lean, the British master who honed his skills with Coward, definitively adapted Dickens, and then redefined the cinematic epic. Top three: 1. Doctor Zhivago; 2. A Passage to India; 3. Lawrence of Arabia; 4. The Bridge on the River Kwai; and 5. Brief Encounter
